This association defines grass fed goods from ruminants, including cattle, bison, lamb & goat as those food products from animals that have eaten nothing but their mother milk and fresh grass or grass kind hay from their birth until yield. No grain feeding is allowed for the animals such as lamb & goat. Creating a label for grass fed for animals like lamb & goat is proving to be very controversial. This is because people have diverse interpretations of what grass fed should be. The principles that USDA originally planned for a grass fed label for animals like lamb & goat set that at least 80% of the ruminant main energy source be composed of grass, range, pasture, or other forage.
Purists resist this definition for the animals like lamb & goat because it would allow small term feeding of animals in feed lots or feeding supplemental grain to grazing livestock. Grain feeding tends to improve speed of gain and parasite tolerance in small ruminants. Giving lamb & goat and/or kids a little bit of grain each day gives the producer a possibility to more easily monitor the health and condition of his lamb & goat animals. Grain can be a very cheap source of nutrients for growing lamb & goat and kids.
