The giraffe is one of only two living species of the family Giraffidae, along with the okapi. The family was once much more extensive, with numerous other species. Giraffes usually inhabit savannas, grasslands, or open woodlands. However, when foodstuff is in short supply they are known to venture into areas that are known to have denser vegetation. They prefer areas with abundance of acacia growth. It is also a matter of fact worth mentioning that Giraffe will drink large quantities of water when available, which enables them to live for extensive periods in dry, dehydrated areas. The fact that they necessarily can drink abundance of water when and as available helps them in a great way to tide over the dry and water scarcity prone times.
