Domestication of the chicken was already under way in Vietnam over 10,000 years ago according to the current confirmation. From India the chicken made its way to the Persianized kingdom of Lydia in western Asia Minor. By the fifth century BC, chicken were imported to Greece. Chicken had been known in Egypt since the 18th Dynasty. These types of animals came to Egypt from the territory between Syria and Shinar, Babylonia, according to the archives of Tutmose III.
The chicken is supposed to have descended from both the Red Jungle fowl and the Grey Jungle fowl, though hybrids of both wild types usually lean to be sterile. Recent genetic work has exposed that the genotype for yellow skin present in the domestic chicken is not present in what is otherwise its closest kin, the Red Jungle fowl. It is mainly that the yellow skin trait in domestic birds like chicken originated in the Grey Jungle fowl.
In the UK and Canada adult male chickens are known as cocks whereas in America and Australia they are called roosters. Males under a year old are called cockerels. Castrated roosters are called capons (though both surgical and chemical castration is now illegal in some parts of the world). Females over a year old are known as hens, and younger females are pullets. In Australia and New Zealand also sometimes in Britain, there is hook to describe all ages and both sexes.
